Calling all freshers

Hi guys,

Here in Bedford we’re all totally excited about what’s in store for all of us this new academic year. Last year the KA Society went from just 5 people up to a total of 25 people. We had friends of friends of friends who came along to The Kings Arms Church to check us out and everyone who came loved it.

We ran a Student Alpha Course round at the students house at Gifford Rd and we saw every person there commit their lives to God. So we’re all buzzing and so looking forward to seeing more of you Freshers coming along to join us at the Kings Arms and the KA Society.

If you’re wandering which church to go to when you get here then you’re spoilt for choice in Bedford. There are loads of great churches. I can guarantee that you’ll get a warm welcome from us here and if you’re wondering who to hang out with and what you’ll do when you get here, then worry no further. We are totally excited about you coming to Bedford and we’ve got loads of stuff planned at the beginning of term.

Hopefully you got our flyer in the student pack which talks about our ‘Find Your Feet Day’ where we’ll show you round town and get you some lunch and we’ve got plenty of other stuff planned for us to do as well. You wont get bored!

We’re also planning a weekend away in November (dates and details to be released soon) for all students and 20’s in the church.

So, if you know you’re coming to Bedford this year then give me a bell.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Fair Trade Stall

This year during fair trade fortnight myself and six other students (Iain, Craig, Emma, Matt, Sophie & Mark) ran a fair trade stall on campus to raise funds for Tradecraft and increase awareness about the benefits of buying products that have been issued fair trade approval.

Although the day we held the stall on was also a day the lecturers went on strike it was still great to see a number of students interested in the products and taking leaflets away with them.

I'm sure I speak for the rest of the guys when I say that I feel its really important we bring the issue of fair trade into the open on campus to encourage students to think about the products they buy, where they have come from and how they have got onto the shelves at the local supermarket. As Christians I think we should take the lead on issues like this and stand up for the rights of the oppressed in this case the disadvantaged farmers and workers in the developing world that rely on receiving a fair and stable price for their produce.

After we closed the stall around 4pm and counted up all the donations we were able to send a gift of £81.68 to Tradecraft and more importantly get many people thinking about buying fair trade products in the future. A great result and a great effort by all involved, well done guys! James.

‘It's 2006 Already'

Can you believe it's 2006 already. Doesn't time fly when you're having fun!

We've had a great Autumn term in the KA Society. We've had loads of fresh faces along including Abs, Mark, Joel, Craig, Emma, Jared, Andy, Deborah, Jonny, Ben and it was great to see second years like Abi, Sophie, Bernadette and Aima a lot more often too.

Highlights of the academic year so far

Friendships have been built really quickly and many of us would count each other as our closest friends already. It's been great for me personally to see KA grow in size and God answer many of our prayers. It's also encouraging to see how the 3rd and 4th years we have, step up a gear in leadership and being an example to others, particularly to the Freshers.

Highlights of the last term for me have been seeing everyone's relationship with God move on so much. For some, they've realised that God is truly alive and someone that we can have relationship with. And for some also, they've been able to be part of a church which is alive and growing and a place that they can feel part of a family, maybe for the first time.

Students have been regularly bringing their friends who aren't Christians along to church. Isn't it great to be a part of a church where we are proud to bring our friends along to and not be embarrassed!

We've been bringing our friends along to The Alpha Course too. In fact, 2 students who came along for the last 3 weeks of the course were BOTH HEALED from injuries. Isn't God great! They both think it was down to coincidence but we know what really happened don't we!

During the term many students helped out at the Nightshelter which the church runs and everyone said what a great time they had serving the guys and chatting with them.

Quasar (laser shooting) was also a regular thing that we did and I won't mention who won that most of the time! We also ate loads. I think I'd join with the students in saying a “BIG THANK YOU” to many people in the church who hosted the students on Sundays for lunch. Long may it continue into the New Year. It's a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, getting to know other people in the church and filling our bellies!

Every student has committed to serving in some way in the church. Whether it's in a worship band or serving tea and coffee or stewarding or kids work, the students have got stuck in and are loving every minute of it.

But the highlight of the term for me (and for most of the church) was the Student Comedy Nativity. Excellently written by Joel and Abi and acted (in a variety of standards!) by ALL of the students that come along to the KA, it had the church in stitches from beginning to end. Never again will I be able to look at Mark without seeing him in his angel outfit (though he secretly enjoyed it!), or forget Ben as a donkey, or Abi with a Star Wars pillow as Jesus! It was excellent and I'm already looking forward to the next one!

Bring on 2006!

From what I've seen of all the characters and personalities that we have been blessed with this academic year, I know that this next term will bring even more fun, excitement, and more importantly, deeper relationships with God and each other.

Many of us have committed to read the Bible in a year and I for one have stuck to it so far…Just! (though its only 5th Jan!)

From getting to know a wider range of people in church, to meeting up with other small groups, to serving again at the Nightshelter, I'm excited about what God has in store.

I'm keen to make more of an impact on Campus by reaching out to our friends. God can and will work through each of us, no matter how qualified we may or may not feel. I have been praying for ages that God would start doing incredible things on campus, and, if he doesn't move through us, then who else will he move through?

So, ‘BRING IT ON'.
